Santorini
Fira: Fira, has 1,600 inhabitants and is located on
the west part of the island of Santorini Greece, 10km away
from the Port of Athinios.
Fira is perched on the edge of a 260 meter cliff and offers
a fantastic panorama on the volcano.
The earthquakes of 1956 destroyed a part of the town but
hopefully, some of the18th century houses are still
standing. The town is typically Cycladic.
It is a busy touristy area and a stop for the majority of
the cruise ships. The street are filled with all kind of
shops, traditional and modern, many jewelleries, souvenir
shops, restaurants, bars and night-clubs. Despite of all the
tourism, the landscapes are still fantastic. The town is
full of small houses of traditional architecture, blue domed
churches, sun-bathed verandas, stepped streets and with the
amazing endless blue sky surrounding the black islands of
the volcano as a background.
You can also walk around the small churches and monasteries
(Agios Minas, the cathedral of Hypapandi, the monastery of
Panagia ton Dominikanidon, the cathedral of Christ, the
monastery of Panagia ton Dominikanidon and Panagia tou
Rodariou), the Archaeological Museum where you will also
find the frequently photographed blue dome and white bell
tower of Agios Mina and the Megaron Gyzi Museum with its
fascinating collection of photos of Fira before and after
1956.
From Fira, you can have a tour by boat to the volcano of Nea
and Palia Kameni.
On the main road, you will find the bus station for all
directions and the taxi station.
The main square in Fira is Plateia Theotokopoulou where many
people meet before going out at night.
Firostefani is the nearest village to Fira, and used to be a
kilometre away from the town. Today it is the extension of
Fira. You will find in that village one of the most famous
blue domed church of Santorini which post card has and is
been sent all over the world. |
