Santorini, Volcano
Santorini Volcano:
The two small islands of lava in the centre of Santorini Caldera
called Palia (old) and Nea (new) Kameni, which means burned in
Greek, are the youngest pieces of land in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Palea Kameni (Old Burnt Island) is less than 2000 years old, while
Nea Kameni (Young Burnt Island) began to form itself only 425 years
ago.
The Santorini volcano is one of the most famous attractions of
Santorini. You will notice some steam coming out from the rocks and
admire some amazing frozen lava formations. Daily Volcano cruises
advertised everywhere won't allow you to miss the opportunity to
visit it.
Once on the shore of the island of Nea Kameni, there is a 20 minute
walk on a 'lunar' landscape to finally see the volcano's crater and
some holes where the sulphur steam comes out from. From this island
you will also be able to enjoy a nice view of the mainland.
The boat will then take you to the hot springs of Palia Kameni,
where you can immerge yourself in warm bubbling water. Afterwards,
the boat will lead you to Thirassia.
